Dominican Nuns Praying for Souls

Praying for Souls in the Prison of Purgatory Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. During the month of November, we are reminded once again of the privilege to assist our loved ones and all our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in Christ. These are days filled with faith in believing that the souls of our beloved, who are still being deprived of the vision of God, may speedily attain the joy of Eternal Life through our prayers and sacrifices. We hold the keys to help open the gate of heaven for them since they can no longer help themselves. To the apostle of Mercy, Saint Maria Faustina, Jesus has revealed this mystery…Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice. The treasury of the Church that Christ speaks about is the spiritual goods of the communion of saints: “the infinite value, which can never be exhausted, which Christ’s merits have before God.” And, the Church, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Jesus Christ, has the authority to open this treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints so that we may obtain from the Father the remission of the temporal punishments due to sins (CCC 1474-1479). We have the power to bring relief to the Holy Souls who are being purified by gaining indulgence for them. Here are the different ways we can do that:During the month of November: Each day, we can receive plenary indulgence to apply to a particular soul by visiting a cemetery and pray (even mentally if one is unable to so physically) for the departed. This is an exceptional decree that is being granted to us by the Apostolic Penitentiary due to COVID.  Throughout the year we can also gain plenary indulgence for souls by:Eucharistic Adoration. “Visit the Blessed Sacrament for adoration lasting at least a half hour.”Praying the Rosary. “Devoutly recite the Marian Rosary in a church or oratory, or in a family, or at gatherings of baptized ChristiansReading or listening to Sacred Scriptures for at least a half an hour; if the time is less, the indulgence will be partial.Pray the Stations of the Cross. We may choose who the indulgence applies to: either ourselves or to a holy soul in purgatory. Fulfill all these three conditions:Go to confessions.Receive Holy Communion.Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. One Our Father and one Hail Mary fully satisfies this.Over all, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most efficacious means of alleviating the suffering of our deceased loved ones. A novena of masses will be offered at 8:00 a.m. in our Monastery Chapel for all our beloved departed from November 13, 2021 to November 21, 2021.Please join us in offering prayers and sacrifices for all the Holy Souls by mailing us the form at the end of this blog with the names of your loved ones whom you wish for us to especially remember during the month. In remembering our deceased loved ones, we are filled with hope that we too may join them one day and together we shall know the goodness of Our Father as we encounter His deep love and mercy for us. Deo Gratias!

Happy Feast Day from Denise

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Happy Feast Day!!
Today we celebrate one of our great feasts. It is the 450th anniversary commemorating the victory at Lepanto. Along with the feasts of St. Dominic and St. Catherine, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, is of special importance. It reminds us of our Dominican devotion to Our Lady, and the power of the Rosary.

The Rosary is one of our daily obligations, and for good reason. One member praying the rosary, while in the state of grace, is very effective. An entire province praying the rosary, while in a state of grace, has enormous power. For this reason, it is essential that we remain in a state of grace, remain united in our chapters, and remain consistent with our daily rosary.

This is especially important in our current society. We can see all around us the spirits of fear, anxiety and division. This is the work of the enemy. The rosary is the remedy. When we pray the rosary, Our Lady prays with us. She draws us close to Her Immaculate Heart and keeps us united under Her mantle.

Give Our Lady a special place in your chapters. Place a statue of Her on the meeting table. Pray the rosary together at each chapter meeting. Avoid discussing politics or controversial subjects. Forgive as you are forgiven. Make your chapters into little refuges of peace and fellowship. In this way, we can show others the distinction between belonging to the world and belonging to Jesus. Then the Holy Spirit will dwell among us and attract people searching for grace.

May Our Lady obtain special graces for you today.
You are all in my daily prayers. Please keep me in yours.
Denise
PS:  The attached image was sent by one of our members. Notice the sun shining on the rosary in Our Lady’s hand.
Please forward this to all your chapter members.

Feast day

Pius V instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory in order to commemorate the victory at Lepanto, which he attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary.[5] Dedications to Our Lady of Victory had preceded this papal declaration. In particular, Simon de Montfort, 5th Earl of Leicester built the first shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Victory in thanks for the Catholic victory over the Albigensians at the Battle of Muret on September 12, 1213.[5] In thanksgiving for victory at the Battle of Bouvines in July 1214, Philip Augustus of France founded the Abbey of Notre Dame de la Victoire, between Senlis and Mont l’Evêque.[8] In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the name of the feast to Feast of the Holy Rosary, to be celebrated on the first Sunday of October.[9] The Dominican friar Juan Lopez in his 1584 book on the rosary states that the feast of the rosary was offered “in memory and in perpetual gratitude of the miraculous victory that the Lord gave to his Christian people that day against the Turkish armada”.[10] In 1671 the observance of this festival was extended by Clement X to the whole of Spain, and somewhat later Clement XI, after the victory over the Turks gained by Prince Eugene in the Battle of Petrovaradin on 5 August 1716 (the feast of Our Lady of the Snows), commanded the feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church.[2]Leo XIII raised the feast to the rank of a double of the second class and added to the Litany of Loreto the invocation “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary”. On this feast, in every church in which the Rosary confraternity has been duly erected, a plenary indulgencetoties quoties is granted upon certain conditions to all who visit therein the Rosary chapel or statue of Our Lady. This has been called the “Portiuncula” of the Rosary.[citation needed]Pius X in 1913 changed the date to 7 October, as part of his effort to restore celebration of the liturgy of the Sundays. In 1960 under Pope John XXIII it is listed under the title Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary; and under the 1969 liturgical reforms of Pope Paul VI Our Lady of the Rosary is mentioned as a mandatory memorial.[11]

Request for National  Daily Rosary in October to end abortion.

From: Relevant Radio <info@relevantradio.com> Date: 9/30/21 9:19 AM (GMT-08:00) To: Brenda Lee Allor <brenda.allor@outlook.com> Subject: If a million people prayed the Rosary every night in October, would it make a difference?

September 30, 2021   Dear Brenda Lee,

Three days ago, Relevant Radio, EWTN, and the Napa Institute announced a joint effort to pray and promote the daily Rosary for life this October. We are hoping many other Catholic organizations follow our lead, because we believe if everyone does something, we could have more than one million Catholics praying daily in the Month of the Rosary. We are praying for an end to legal abortion in the USA as the Supreme Court begins a new session this month, and in December will hear the Dobbs case that could overturn Roe v. Wade.

Will it make a difference? We won’t know if we don’t try. Every time I have tried, it has made a difference. So I invite you, your family, and your friends, to join me each evening on the Family Rosary Across America at 7 pm CT on your local Relevant Radio station, on the Relevant Radio app, or at RelevantRadio.com. People who pray together have the potential to change the course of history.

God bless you always, and I hope you join us for the Family Rosary Across America tonight at 7 PM CT!

    With prayers and best wishes,

    Rev. Francis Joseph Hoffman, JCD

A CHANT TO PRAISE GOD WITH OUR ANGELIC FRIENDS

Dominican Nuns O.P., Corpus Christi, Menlo Park, CA
    September 29, 2021

This week we have the joy of honoring our Angelic Friends: the Archangels and our own Guardian Angels, to whom God has entrusted our souls to their care and guidance.

Our Holy Mother Church teaches us that God is glorified through the Angels, and by their great dignity and splendor, God shows how infinitely great He is! (from the Preface of the Mass of the Archangels)

So with these holy creatures of God, let us together chant a psalm of praise. Our Sisters prepared this special video for you to join us in praising God for his love and Providential care for us…

Are we aware of the assistance of these wonderful friends? And who are they exactly?

Saint Michael the Archangel (“Who is like God?”) is a warrior against Satan and who has in his command legions of angels (Revelation 12:7-9). He is the protector of Israel (Daniel 12:1), the Church and all peoples. It is quite beneficial for us to invoke his name daily for protection from the snares of the Devil.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel (“Strength of God”) is a messenger who announces to Zechariah the birth of Saint John the Baptist, and to the Blessed Virgin Mary the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 1:5-38). Remember to ask him for help each time we greet Our Lady with his words “Hail, full of grace.”

Saint Raphael (“Medicine of God,” “God’s Remedy,” or “God Heals”) is the Archangel who cares for Tobias ( on his journey Tobit 5-12). Don’t forget to ask for his help daily as we travel through this life on earth. He is the patron of travelers, of purity, of happy meetings, and of thanks, praise and prayer, among others!

Each of us also have a Guardian Angel to protect and guide us during our life pilgrimage. Let us be attentive and obedience to the guidance of our Guardian Angel. Why? Because our Guardian Angel is in heaven and always look upon the Face of God and knows God’s will for our life (Matthew 18:10).

Let us praise God unceasingly and thank our Guardian Angel and all these wonderful Angelic Friends daily for their angelic service!

O most holy angel of God, appointed by God to be my guardian, I give you thanks for all the benefits which you have ever bestowed on me in body and in soul. I praise and glorify you that you condescended to assist me with such patient fidelity, and to defend me against all the assaults of my enemies. Blessed be the hour in which you were assigned me for my guardian, my defender and my patron. In acknowledgement and return for all your loving ministries to me, I offer you the infinitely precious and noble heart of Jesus, and firmly purpose to obey you henceforward, and most faithfully to serve my God. Amen.

    -Saint Gertrude’s Guardian Angel Prayer

    Welcome from our new Prioress

Welcome to the new council members and officers who were installed yesterday and those to be installed later this week. I just want to put out a reminder that our monthly council meetings are on the third Thursday of the month at 11:00 a.m. and we have been doing them by Zoom which I would like to continue for now. This means that the first meeting for our new council will be on Thurs. Oct. 21 at 11:00 a.m. Please mark that on your calendars. If you have any agenda items to add please let me know at least a week before so it can be included.

My biggest concerns right now are that we are going into a very busy time of year for us. We have Thanksgiving baskets coming up in Nov. I am trying to clarify from Cecelia just how much, if anything, she is able to do this year as it is a big undertaking and she is the only one who has all of the expertise and knowledge of how to pull it together. If she is unable to do this, is there anyone on the council who would like to take this on with her guidance? I know she pulls in a lot of groups from the parish to help so it is more the organizing part of it that would be needed. Also the chapter members have been very involved and willing to help out with things like shopping for food items, picking up turkeys, etc. but need to be told what the needs are so they can jump in.

Mary Halvorson sent us a very nice card and is having a Mass said for the council as we begin our terms. Thank you to all of you for being willing to serve and I look forward to working together with you. St. Vincent dePaul whose feast it is today, pray for us.

40 Days for Life Fall 2021

    From Brenda,

    Dear pro-life prayer warriors,
Thanks for supporting life, from it’s very beginning to natural death.
Julie and I went to the Summer Symposium for 40 Days for Life and returned on Aug 9th.  It was so inspirational!! We are charged up and ready to get geared up for our next campaign at Lilith, starting Sept 22nd, and ending Oct 31st.
Please save the following dates and mark them on your calendar:
    1) 40 Days for Life Opening Rally / Prayer vigil Saturday, Sept 18th, at 2 pm at 340 NE Clackamas St (Aquinas Hall).  Portland, 97232.
We decided not to have the Opening vigil at Lilith. There were time constraints, safety concerns, and parking issues at Lilith. Plus we have a lot of great prizes you can win by signing up for vigil hours at Lilith. Therefore, we needed tables to put them on, and lots of room. It will be easier for the speakers also, as they won’t have to shout to be heard over construction noise.
    2)  40 Days for Life Opening Mass.  Catholics and Protestants are all welcome.
      Sunday, Sept 12th  11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral  1716 NW Davis.  97209
The Archbishop will celebrate Mass with Msgr. Gerard O’Connor and Fr. Charles McCoy.
Some of the prizes will be:
The new book Shawn Carney and Steve Karlan wrote: “What to say When…..”  The complete new guide to discussing abortion. With family members, acquaintances, etc in a matter-of-fact manner. The Heart of the Matter–a beautiful devotional book. If this book doesn’t get you inspired to pray more for an end to abortion, nothing will! It’s fantastic.
The DVD of “UnPlanned” Plus, hats, sweatshirts, tee shirts (long and short-sleeved), water bottles.
And last but not least, a cowboy hat from Houston!
Stay tuned for the flyers with more details.
